Maybe only on the water do you quite literally have to learn the ropes.

 

But while this knowledge is an essential part of training for crew members, it is only a small part of the total skills base available to members of the Coastal Patrol.

 

Our volunteers have a wide range of training options open to them and can rapidly become accomplished at new skills or enhance existing talents.

 

The courses run by the Ulladulla division are open all comers. Members of the public can join the classes on marine meteorology, seamanship, coastal navigation and first aid run regularly at the Harbour signal station.

 

Modest fees apply to all - but Patrol membership brings the advantage of discounted charges.

 

All of the courses are conducted by qualified instructors and while they are tailored to Coastal Patrol requirements, these are such that they equal or surpass equivalent qualifications in the community at large.

 

For example a first aid certificate with the RVCP also stands up with any similar national accreditation.

 

Some people join the courses because they want to improve their sea skills for private sailing ventures - then get hooked on the Patrol!

 

Others just want to indulge a love of things nautical with more formal training.

 

Private citizens can also use the Coastal Patrol education facilities to complete the NSW Maritime boat driver’s licence examination.

 

With the exception of the radio operators course, all the study classes are completely voluntary - you need only to achieve what you want.
