The radio room at Ulladulla Signal Station
It would be difficult to find a more varied group of people sharing dedication to the same objective.
But the members of the Ulladulla division come from all walks of life, age groups, trades, and professions.
The men and women who strive to make leisure boating safe for visitors and locals alike are a diverse bunch - cooks, accountants, mechanics, electricians, nurses, salesmen and many other occupations.
They are united by the common goal of marine safety.
Almost anyone can join the Patrol. While some existing members have marine backgrounds, no previous association with the sea is needed.
It doesn’t even matter if you get seasick in the shower, there’s a job you can do that ensures you can stay high and dry.
The two core functions are radio operator and crew member. Almost all members have Marine Radio Operators Certificates of Proficiency issued after examination by the Australian Communications Authority.
This qualification is essential for members to work one of the six-hour radio watches at the base. Usually only one radio shift a month is required - some do more - and training is provided.
Crew membership is also open to all. If you are reasonably fit, enjoy the water and are prepared to undertake the training, it can be exciting and extremely rewarding.
